Alicia Alcamo, MD, obtained her B.S. in Biology at Elizabethtown College. It was during this time she had her first exposure to scientific research and she was fortunate to participate in several different experiences that sparked her interest in the scientific process and research design. During her time in medical school at The Ohio State University, she was able to complete a combined degree program where she received her MPH degree with a specialization in clinical and translational science alongside her medical doctorate. Her focus at OSU was on the neonatal population and exploring the disease process of necrotizing enterocolitis by evaluating risk factors and potential therapeutic targets. In her pediatric residency, her research focus shifted to her public health and medical education interests. One of her projects focused on creating a curriculum for pediatric residents covering how to screen, identify and intervene on the various social determinants of health. She also developed a curriculum to teach oral presentation skills to third year medical students.
Currently, she is working under the mentorship of Raj Aneja and Bob Clark in the Department of Critical Care Medicine and the Safar Center for Resuscitation Research. She is merging her clinical interest in the critical care management of solid organ transplant patients into her research pursuits, focusing on the unique risks for both sepsis and neurotoxicity as a result of their necessary immunosuppression.
