Study on the Pittsburgh Infant Brain Injury Score (PIBIS) Published in Pediatrics

Recently, Safar Center Associate Director Dr. Rachel Berger and colleagues published an article in the journal Pediatrics, validating the Pittsburgh Infant Brain Injury Score (PIBIS), a Clinical Prediction Tool (CPR) developed by Dr. Berger and others to determine if infants at risk of Abusive Head Trauma (AHT) should undergo computed tomography of the head. The study, which assessed over 1000 infants and was carried out in three centers across the US, concluded  that the clinical implementation of the PIBIS scoring system deserves to be evaluated in a broader application beyond pediatric tertiary care centers because it has the potential to help physicians in the early identification of infants with AHT.
